1. Buying a console? Second-hand saves the most this year
Consoles got more expensive in 2025 and 2026 (Nintendo in August 2025, Valve in May 2026, Microsoft in August 2026), but second-hand prices did not follow. Second-hand here means the median sold price on Mercari across all conditions, mostly used.

5. Five tips from the data
- Do not pay over the odds for consoles. With new prices up, a second-hand console in good condition is the best value gift in this report.
- Most "hype" is in a few pairs. Big premiums sit in collaborations (Travis Scott); general releases sell close to retail.
- Prices fall after the holidays. Many unwanted gifts are listed in January, so sell early or wait for prices to settle.
- Fees change the winner. The platform with the highest price is not always the one that pays you most.
- Check the sample size. A price from 5 sales moves more than one from 50; every item page shows both.

- Resale prices: median of recent sold prices (StockX, GOAT, Mercari), this week's data. Watches are left out because we only have dealer asking prices for them. Full methodology.
- New prices: 2026 US list prices with a source link for each, checked 2026-11-01. Sneaker retail from the GOAT listing.
- Not included: sales tax, shipping, Black Friday discounts and condition differences.

Yes, by a lot this year. After the 2025 and 2026 price increases, the consoles we track sell second-hand for 27-62% less than new. These are median sold prices on Mercari across all conditions, so check the condition, the seller's rating and the return policy before you buy.
Which sneakers sell above retail right now?
8 of the 10 sneakers we track with a known retail price sell above it (median premium +50%). The biggest is the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low OG 'Mocha' at 1494% over retail. Premiums change every week and most sneakers never resell above retail; this list is only popular pairs.
Where should I sell an unwanted gift after the holidays?
It depends on the item and the price: sneakers usually pay most on StockX or GOAT, other items on eBay or Mercari. The table on this page shows what you keep after each platform's 2026 fees; use the free fee calculator for your own price. Shipping is not included.
